Shields Township is responsible for property assessments, assistance for seniors and low-income residents, and road maintenance for unincorporated areas.

We are dedicated to meeting the needs of our community in a fiscally sound and responsible manner and are always happy to discuss your local township government and the services we provide.

Lake County is located in the northeastern corner of Illinois and consists of 18 townships.
Shields Township sits upon the beautiful shore of Lake Michigan, just north of Moraine and West Deerfield Township. Encompassing approximately 18 square miles, Shields includes Lake Bluff, Lake Forest north of Route 60, North Chicago south of 18th Street, as well as the unincorporated communities of Knollwood and Arden Shores.

Supervisor’s Office

The Supervisor, as the executive officer of the Township, manages its day-to-day operations and is independently responsible for administering the General Assistance Program. The Supervisor oversees all the programs of the Township and conducts the monthly meetings of the Board of Trustees. The Supervisor is a voting member of the Board.

The Supervisor’s office staff is trained to assist with all of the programs the office administers.

Assessor’s Office

The Township Assessor’s Office staff is responsible for establishing the market value on all parcels of real estate on an annual basis. The assessed value is used to determine each taxpayer’s share of the tax burden. Fairness and equity are applied to all assessments to ensure fair distribution of taxes.

Highway Department

We are responsible for road services in the unincorporated areas of Shields Township, including 9.3 miles of roadway in:

Knollwood — Located between Route 176 on the south, Atkinson Road on the north, Route 41 on the east, and Bayonne Avenue on the west. The portion of Knollwood west of Bayonne Avenue is in Libertyville Township.

Arden Shores North and South — Located north of Route 176 and east of Green Bay Road.

The Shields Township Offices are available:
• During regular service hours (except holidays)

> Friday 8:30 AM - Noon
• Or at an upcoming board meeting.

The Board of Trustees generally meets on the third Thursday of each month at 6:30 pm in the Shields Township Community Room.
